we all know of the art that survived on stone and in minds of countless, but we will never know of the pieces that got burnt, drowned, or lost to ignorance

But if an art is lost, is it even a piece of art? Why would a painting be a masterpiece if we didn’t save it from the fire, or the flood, or from the people to whom sophistication is pre-industrial?

I read recently that Vincent van Gogh’s art was discovered posthumously. Was it the case of our ignorance? Are there any other van Gogh’s we will never know about?
